I’m fully aware that Chris might not be speaking to me for a while after this, but I’ll go ahead and admit that I finally succumbed to watching Road to Perdition, and Signs. What can I tell you Chris? I was desperate, r-e-a-l desperate. In the last 12 months, I’ve only seen four ‘new’ movies: Black Hawk Down, The Scorpion King, The Fellowship of the Ring, and The Two Towers. Lucian offered me the discs last week, and I figured what the hell.
Road to Perdition - Paul Newman, Tom Hanks, and gangsters, should be good for something right? Wrong. Newman’s role is too small, and his character never seen at any length substantial enough to give it a commanding presence, or enjoy the actor’s talent. Hanks was there, but he failed to shine. The audience couldn’t connect with him. You never sensed that he was a man consumed by the slaugher of his family, and driven to avenge it, or protect his remaining son - perhaps he was suppossed to appear unemotional, but it didn’t really feel that way. The plot was abrubpt, and there was nothing to take away from this movie. Weak.
Signs - Aliens? You’ve got to be kidding me?! At the very least, I thought this was going to be a message from the spirit world or something, but Aliens? The water link, how pathetic was that? This from a man who wants to do Jesus in Aramaic for reasons of ‘accuracy’ and ‘reality’. “Swing Away!”
If you haven’t already, you might want to check out “Adaptation”; Charlie Kaufmans screenplay about Charlie Kaufman writing a screenplay about Charlie Kaufman writing a screenplay adaptation on the book “The Orchid Thief”. It’s as twisted as Memento, except the story is better. Unfortunately it’s a bit too long.
Also, I hear “About Schmidt”, starring Jack “God” Nicholson is very good, too.

Thanks for the recommendations Tomas. Romanian theatres are -months- behind the US, UK, and Central Europe, and then they tend to be rather selective about what they show (action blockbusters before anything else), so I doubt if I’ll be seeing either of those here.
Both are on my list of things to be seen though, and I’m sure I’ll take ‘em in when I reach the plains of Alberta.

Swedish theatres are far behind, too. A lot of the time though, the movie is available for download off of peer-to-peer networks in real nice quality before it hits the theatres over here..

Hehe! Unfortunately broadband is just starting to appear here in Romania, but I’m still stuck on dialup. None of the cable internet providers service the zone where I live, and a 128k radiolink is a whopping $1500/month (totally out of the question, just based on the principle of being so badly ripped off, never mind the cost).
Of course, this is Romania and piracy is rife, but films are much harder to come by than software. I realise now that bringing ~200 divX movies with from the US just wasn’t enough ;)

Ha! Hope you learned your lesson, fella!
Having said that, I tried to sit through “Cleopatra 2525” recently. I’m sure it listed Sam Raimi as one of the producers, but I guess that means nothing. It looked like a chick version of Buck Rogers, with ex-porn stars trying so damn hard to go legit. I wished they hadn’t tried so hard; might have helped the film.
My site seems to be going down more often than… I’ll stop right there.
