Do-It-Yourself PDFs:

Lou Quillo has the lowdown on how to create your own Acrobat PDFs, without having to shell out your hard earned $$$ (and no, I’m not talking about Kazaa). Oddly enough, someone asked me just the other day if I could help them produce a few proposals in PDF. How convenient.

The real credit certainly goes to the folks at U of W for building GhostScript, and to the others I cited who’ve explained things. Any of us — with enough energy and few distractions — could reverse-engineer PDF: Google obviously has. Actually doing it is the valuable piece.

It’s funny how the popularity of a file format bears directly on its commercial undoing. I’d guess that Adobe — not just PDF — couldn’t happen today. Folks younger than me probably know that innately.

Last, GhostWritten (?) PDFs aren’t as rich as they might be, but the not-so-LazyWeb will sort that out too before long.
