computer angst:

Ok, so the drive is dead, and I can’t get any of my e-mail off of it (not good, because I don’t have a few of those addresses listed anywhere else). Still, not too serious. Very frustrating though.

Going back to windows 2000 pro is no fun. I miss so many of XP’s built in functions, improvements, and the more stylish GUI. I would be on XP right now, but a friend has my CD, and I have no idea when I’ll be able to get in touch with him.

Now I also have to haggle with IBM for a replacement (the drive is still under warranty), complicated of course by the fact that I purchased this particular drive up in the US. [waits for call-center to open… *sigh*]

Is XP really that great? I thought Windows went downhill after 98SE. That’s the only one I trust anymore.

I’d get a Mac but damn those prices.

2kpro was definitely an improvement over 98SE (more stable, better performance). An initial lack of drivers meant that it wasn’t everyone’s kettle of fish, but it is now widely supported. ME(Millennium Edition) on the other hand is just awful, avoid it at all costs. (memory leaks seriously compromise performance and stability, and it just feels ‘dumbed-down’)

I was deeply hostile towards XP when it launched. A result of the BS cooked up by Ballmer and MS. After avoiding it for a few months, I decided to face the beast, if only to learn more about my enemy. I found it not to be the POS that Ballmer’s babbling had led me to believe it was. XP Pro is a significant advancement over previous versions of the Microsoft OS, and quite arguably their best to date. XP won’t dazzle you right out of the box, you do need to go in and tune it up slightly before it begins to shine, but it’s well worth the effort. After working in XP you may feel quite limited working with any other MS OS. It isn’t the perfect OS, but I don’t think there is such a thing. XP has some features that I was really surprised to see come out of Redmond, but there is just too much to discuss here. Expect a rather lengthy e-mail on the subject ;)
